We’ll feature captivating programs on social history or natural history\, each presented by a recognized expert. \nFebruary 6 History Talk: Whatever Happened to Ambrose Asher?\n \nFamily stories indicate that Ambrose Asher was captured by Indians in the 1860s\, with his parents’ fate unknown. While the family story was not correct in detail\, it provided enough information to discover the truth through genealogical and historical research of the Plains Indian Wars. The story provides a prelude to the Sand Creek Massacre in late 1864 and later events of the Plains Indian Wars. Speaker Dave Welch\, a descendant of Ambrose Asher\, is a long-time member and officer of the Oregon-California Trails Association. \n  \nDate: Thursday\, February 6 \nTime: Noon (doors open at 11:30 AM) \nPlace: Schmidt House\, 330 Schmidt Place SW\, Tumwater \nAdmission: Free! \nDoors open at 11:30 AM. SUMMARY:History Talk: Women in the Revolutionary War
DESCRIPTION:Monthly History Talks at the Schmidt House are back for autumn 2024! Join us in Tumwater at noon on the first Thursday of each month for an hour-long history talk. We’ll feature captivating programs on social history or natural history\, each presented by a recognized expert. \nCHANGE IN SPEAKER \nDue to unforeseen circumstances\, Jewell Dunn\, our guest speaker for November 7\, has had to cancel her presentation about maps from the State Archives. We hope to have Jewell speak at another time. \nFilling in will be Dick Moody of the Sons of the American Revolution. Dick will present a program on: \nNovember 7: Women in the Revolutionary War\n \nHistory books are filled with the heroic exploits of our Patriot ancestors who won the Revolutionary War. Those books focus on the men at historic battles that defeated the British \nIf we look a little deeper\, we can find stories of women and teenagers who were supporters\, spies\, saboteurs\, and yes\, who bore arms and even received a pension. \nLearn about these and other heroines of the Revolutionary War from Dick Moody\, genealogist of the George Rogers Clark Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution. The chapter serves Thurston\, Mason\, and Lewis counties. \nDick has a doctorate in education from Seattle University\, master’s degree from Gonzaga University\, and bachelor’s degree from Central Washington University. \n \nAttendance is free. Doors open at 11:30 AM. First come\, first seated until room capacity is reached. \nThe Schmidt House is located at 330 Schmidt Place SW\, Tumwater. \n  \n
