On Thursday, December 6 at noon, History Talks at the Schmidt House presents: “Arborists Discuss Local Historical Trees.” There have been many stories in recent years about historic trees in the South Sound area, including the Bush Butternut Tree. Two local arborists will share their insight and expertise on this interesting subject.
Ray Gleason from Cascade Tree Experts, LLC in Thurston County will highlight the Bush Butternut Tree and other trees of historic note; and Michael Dolan of Burnt Ridge Nursery in Lewis County will focus on native oaks, historic walnut and chestnut trees and monkey puzzle trees.
Ray Gleason is a Lewis County native who has worked with trees at Cascade Tree Experts, LLC in Thurston County for 15 years. He is an arborist and forest scientist with a B.A. degree from the Evergreen State College. Ray has a passion for maintaining trees from our pioneer era. He successfully transplanted a seedling from the famous George Bush farm tree to the State Capitol grounds in 2010.
Michael Dolan has been farming orchards for 38 years. He is a tree enthusiast who sells his Burnt Ridge Nursery plants at the Olympia Farmers Market on weekends from April through December. He holds a B.A. degree from the Evergreen State College with a specialty in edible woody plants. He’ll discuss native oaks such as the Meeker oak and talk about acorns, walnuts and chestnuts as an important food source.
